How many watts does a dishwasher use
While a dishwasher runs, it draws 1,200 to 2,400 W, and it has no starting surge. The smallest portable that can run it is 3,000 W.
Running watts and starting watts
| Load | Running | Starting |
|---|---|---|
| Dishwasher | 1,200 to 2,400 W | no surge |
Source: the Champion wattage chart, 04-17-26. Check the nameplate on your own dishwasher for its exact figure in watts or amps. For amps, multiply by 120 V. Multiply by 240 V only for a two-pole breaker load, for example a well pump.
The smallest generator able to start it
A generator must handle 2,400 W and stay at 80% of its rating or less. The smallest common portable that meets both needs is 3,000 W. Any other load you add puts its running watts on that same generator.
Dishwasher and other loads
| Dishwasher plus | Running | Peak at a start | Smallest portable |
|---|---|---|---|
| lights, TV and the router | 2,970 W | 2,970 W | 4,000 W |
| a freezer and lights | 3,050 W | 3,550 W | 4,000 W |
| a 1/2 hp sump pump and lights | 3,600 W | 4,700 W | 5,000 W |
| a microwave | 3,600 W | 3,600 W | 5,000 W |
| a 1 hp well pump | 4,400 W | 6,400 W | 6,500 W |
| a window AC, 10,000 BTU | 3,600 W | 4,800 W | 5,000 W |
Running watts add up, and only the largest motor start sits on top. A portable's starting output sits about 25% above the running rating. Every load appears on the appliance wattage chart.
