What will a 5,000 watt generator run
Of the 25 common home loads, 23 run on a 5,000 watt generator alone. About 6,250 in starting watts is what decides if a pump or an air conditioner can start up.

A load runs if its running watts fit within 5,000 W and its start fits within 6,250 W; "tight" means running above 4,000 W. Look at your own model's label to see its starting watts. The wattages referenced here sit at the top of their range in Champion's published chart. The appliance wattage chart lists more loads.
Going up to a 6,500 watt generator gets you 1 more of the loads listed, the electric dryer among them.
Running loads together
| Together | Running | Peak at start | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fridge, freezer, lights, router, TV | 1,470 W | 2,270 W | runs |
| Fridge, 1/2 hp sump pump, lights, router | 1,620 W | 2,720 W | runs |
| Fridge, 1 hp well pump, microwave, lights | 3,750 W | 5,750 W | runs |

When each motor starts on its own, running watts add up and only the biggest starting wattage is added at the top.
Gasoline used per hour
We use the EIA US average for gasoline, which is $4.269 a gallon. A portable generator works only outdoors and stays 20 ft from the house. Use an interlock kit or else a transfer switch. Never use a dryer outlet.
Size options: 4,000 watts, 6,500 watts, or All sizes.
