How many watts does a washing machine use
While it runs, a washing machine draws 500 to 1,000 W, and for the second it starts it needs 1,000 to 2,300 W. To run it, the smallest portable is rated at 2,000 W.
Watts for running and starting
| Load | Running | Starting |
|---|---|---|
| Washing machine | 500 to 1,000 W | 1,000 to 2,300 W |
These figures come from the Champion wattage chart dated 04-17-26. Your washing machine's nameplate shows the exact figure, either in watts or in amps. Multiply the amps by 120 V, but use 240 V only when a load such as a well pump is connected to a two-pole breaker.
Smallest generator able to start it
A generator has to handle 2,300 W for the start, and 1,000 W of running load at 80% of its rating or less. At 2,000 W, the smallest common portable size handles both with room to spare. Every other load you add brings its running watts to that same generator.
Washing machine plus other loads
| Washing machine plus | Running | Peak at a start | Smallest portable |
|---|---|---|---|
| lights, TV and the router | 1,570 W | 2,870 W | 3,000 W |
| a freezer and lights | 1,650 W | 2,950 W | 3,000 W |
| a 1/2 hp sump pump and lights | 2,200 W | 3,500 W | 3,000 W |
| a microwave | 2,200 W | 3,500 W | 3,000 W |
| a 1 hp well pump | 3,000 W | 5,000 W | 4,000 W |
| a window AC, 10,000 BTU | 2,200 W | 3,500 W | 3,000 W |
Running watts pile up, and only the biggest motor start sits on top of them. Starting output on a portable runs about 25% above the running rating. The appliance wattage chart lists every load.
